    GeoLoc: Robust Resource Allocation Method for Query Optimization in Data Grid Systems

    International audienceResource allocation (RA) is one of the key stages of distributed query processing in the Data Grid environment. In the last decade were published a number of works in the field that deals with different aspects of the problem. We believe that in those studies authors paid less attention to such important aspects as definition of allocation space and criterion of parallelism degree determination. In this paper we propose a method of RA that extends existing solutions in those two points of interest and resolves the problem in the specific conditions of the large scale heterogeneous environment of Data Grids. Firstly, we propose to use a geographical proximity of nodes to data sources to define the Allocation Space (AS). Secondly, we present the principle of execution time parity between scan and join (build and probe) operations for determination of parallelism degree and for generation of load balanced query execution plans. We conducted an experiment that proved the superiority of our GeoLoc method in terms of response time over the RA method that we chose for the comparison. The present study provides also a brief description of existing methods and their qualitative comparison with respect to proposed method

    International audienceThe quality of a query execution plan chosen by a Cost-Based Optimizer (CBO) depends greatly on the estimation accuracy of input parameter values. Many research results have been produced on improving the estimation accuracy, but they do not work for every situation. Therefore, "robust query optimization" was introduced, in an effort to minimize the sub-optimality risk by accepting the fact that estimates could be inaccurate.     Resource Allocation for Query Optimization in Data Grid Systems: Static Load Balancing Strategies

    International audienceResource allocation is one of the principal stages of relational query processing in data grid systems. Static allocation methods allocate nodes to relational operations during query compilation. Existing heuristics did not take into account the multi-queries environment, where some nodes may become overloaded because they are allocated to too many concurrent queries. Dynamic resource allocation mechanisms are currently developed to modify the physical plan during query execution. In fact, when a node is detected to be overloaded, some of the operations on it will migrate. However, if the resource contention is too heavy in the initial execution plan, the operation migration cost may be very high. In this paper, we propose two load balancing strategies adopted during the static resource allocation phase, so that the workload is balanced at the beginning, the operation migration cost is decreased during the query execution, and therefore the average response time is reduced

    PAIRSE: A Privacy-Preserving Service-Oriented Data Integration System

    International audiencePrivacy is among the key challenges to data integration in many sectors, including healthcare, e-government, etc. The PAIRSE project aims at providing a flexible, looselycoupled and privacy-preserving data integration system in P2P environments. The project exploits recent Web standards and technologies such as Web services and ontologies to export data from autonomous data providers as reusable services, and proposes the use of service composition as a viable solution to answer data integration needs on the fly. The project proposed new composition algorithms and service/composition execution models that preserve privacy of data manipulated by services and compositions. The proposed integration system was demonstrated at EDBT 2013 and VLDB 2011

    Dengue Spatial and Temporal Patterns, French Guiana, 2001

    To study a 2001 dengue fever outbreak in Iracoubo, French Guiana, we recorded the location of all patients’ homes and the date when symptoms were first observed. A geographic information system was used to integrate the patient-related information. The Knox test, a classic space-time analysis technique, was used to detect spatiotemporal clustering. Analysis of the relative-risk (RR) variations when space and time distances vary, highlighted the maximum space and time extent of a dengue transmission focus. The results show that heterogeneity in the RR variations in space and time corresponds to known entomologic and epidemiologic factors, such as the mosquito feeding cycle and host-seeking behavior. This finding demonstrates the relevance and potential of the use of GIS and spatial statistics for elaborating a dengue fever surveillance strategy

    Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. The Ariel payload is developed by a consortium of more than 50 institutes from 16 ESA countries, which include the UK, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, and a NASA contribution

    Most of the dynamic query optimization methods proposed in the literature are centralized. This centralization, in a large-scale environment, generates a bottleneck due to relatively important message exchange on a network with a weak bandwidth and strong latency. It becomes thus convenient to render autonomous and self-adaptable the query execution on a large-scale network. In this perspective, we propose a mobile relational algebra to decentralize the control of dynamic query optimization processes. Experiments, in local and large-scale distributed environments, allow: (i) to validate the proposed proactive migration policy, and (ii) to identify the efficiency intervals of proposed mobile relational algebra
